Rick Stahl has spent 15 years working for The Hideaway Grill, a popular watering hole and stop along Cave Creek Road.

In those one and a half decades, he has witnessed the town evolve. The motorcycle destination spot has changed as well. Tattoo shops, table games and retail were all a part of The Hideaway.

“It’s been progressing,” Stahl said.

The town of Cave Creek recently recognized The Hideaway’s efforts by bestowing it with a brass plaque on its Local Landmarks journey for being an iconic destination in the town.

“We’re one of the businesses that have been here for many, many, many years, the building itself,” Stahl said. “Harold’s has been here for a long time, too.

“We’re — Cave Creek and The Hideaway — a destination for all bikers,” he said. “It’s a nice ride from Phoenix all the way up here.”

Stahl said he and owner Mark Bradshaw have pressed for The Hideaway to be a biker destination.

“Bikers are always looking for someplace to ride,” said Stahl, who has known Bradshaw since they were in the fifth grade. “They used to ride up here back in the old days. Even when we were kids, we used to ride a few of our dirt bikes and go to Harold’s when the road was dirt coming up here.

The Hideaway hosts live music on the weekends. Led by singer Bobby Sisk, Drop Diezel performs from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21.

Stahl called the food great as well. The menu has a wide range of offerings, from salads to appetizers and pizza to sandwiches and melts.

The Hideaway is part of Cave Creek’s mission to celebrate its history. The town launched Cave Creek Local Landmarks in 2021.

Like The Hideaway, iconic places are honored with a bronze plaque. A corresponding map shows recommended Cave Creek destinations.

The next honoree is Big Earl’s Greasy Eats at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 23. For more information, visit cavecreekaz.gov/

Last week, Tuesday, July 20, the Town of Cave Creek celebrated the most recent stop on its Local Landmarks journey: The Hideaway. A brass plaque was gifted to the roadside stop for being an iconic destination in the Town core.

About the Project

The Town is on a mission to recognize and celebrate its vibrant and diverse history — from its residents and its wildlife to local businesses, culture, entertainment — and promote exploration of the unique places that have shaped and housed the town’s vibrant character (and characters!). The Town launched Cave Creek Local Landmarks in 2021.

Iconic places in town are recognized by a bronze plaque that will inter-connect celebrated landmarks to a storytelling map. This map hosts destinations across Cave Creek for the public to explore virtually, physically and over time — through the storytelling of Cave Creek’s pioneers, their descendants and its residents and guests.

The next stop, Big Earl’s Greasy Eats at 7pm, Aug. 23. Learn more about other Town landmarks at cavecreekaz.gov/locallandmarks, check out the interactive map and get out there and explore the town.

The History of The Hideaway

As told by Town of Cave Creek Local Landmarks

“There are no strangers here, just friends you haven’t met,” totes The Hideaway as their friendly slogan. This shaded roadside stop is believed to have been originally erected in the 1930s as housing for workers building the nearby Bartlett Dam, which began construction in 1936.

More recently, in 1984 the Krasson Family: Ron, Maryann and their son Bart, purchased Indian Village. Next to the famed souvenir shop and Mexican food cafe sat a quiet private residence. The Krassons were surprised to learn that at one time, both Indian Village and the next-door residence shared a single 88-acre parcel. It had been divided sometime in the 70s. Like much of Cave Creek’s history, the parcel and the buildings on it are a bit mysterious.

In about 1989, Bart Krasson and his parents acquired the property, reuniting the parcel as one. The Krassons transformed the house into Hannah’s Chocolate Shop, purveyor of homemade fudge, chocolates, ice cream and gifts. Arizona summers, however, are brutal and 80s air conditioning was “not so great,” so after a few years, the Krassons decided chocolate and triple digit desert summers were not as sweet a deal as one could hope.

Hannah’s Chocolate Shop closed, and the building was next leased to a French-Canadian couple who opened a French-style bistro, The Thirsty Cactus. Although cherished by many, Creekers didn’t make for the best Francophiles and within couple of years this space went through yet another transformation.

Soon after, a burly young fella with long blonde hair and a broad grin stopped into the Indian Village and introduced himself. “Hi, I’m your new neighbor!” he proclaimed, and that was how Bart found out his French-Canadian tenants had sold their lease to entrepreneur and motorcycle enthusiast, Mark Bradshaw.

A frequent visitor to Cave Creek, Bradshaw saw an opportunity to create a “destination bar” for bikers — (and his hunch was right). For 25 years, the Hideaway has become a destination stop for bikers from across the country and beyond — especially during April’s Bike Week, when thousands of motorcycles line-up along Cave Creek Road. The roar of the bikes is loud, the live bands are louder, and the air sizzles with the mixed aromas of hamburgers, salt, sunscreen and beer. Since its opening the Hideaway Grill has become world famous and is known to host some of the most famous custom bike builders and motorcycle personalities in the industry.

“Hogs on the north, horses on the south side of the bend,” is how some locals describe the Town Core. Not that you need to be a biker to enjoy the Hideaway; You’re just as likely to a guy in pressed khaki shorts and polo shirt discussing the game on TV surrounded by a crew in leathers. Check your stereotypes at the door: The only requirement at the Hideaway Grill is that you’re there for a good time.

CAVE CREEK, ARIZ., MAR. 29-APR. 7—There’s a place in the Sonoran Desert that’s tucked amongst the saguaros and across the street from a rodeo arena that has many a biker all riled up to visit each spring. Known to locals as the Hideaway, this favorite desert watering hole for two-wheeled adventurists is famous around the world as a must-do destination for anyone visiting the state of Arizona. To residents of the surrounding town who call themselves “Creekers,” Cave Creek is a quiet little oasis in the midst of a changing metropolis that struggles with a personality conflict: Is it a biker town or a wild west cowboy playa?

The answer is a resounding, “Yes.”

The team at the Hideaway Grill and the Road House–Mark Bradshaw, Rick Stahl, Kevin Price, Taylor Bradshaw and the rest of the maniac crew–roll out the welcome mats for 10 days of pandemonium called Cave Creek Bike Week. Chock full of fun stuff like bike shows, vendors, rides and rowdy biker activities, there’s plenty to keep folks trudging the short distance between the two locations while popping in to visit the various bars and businesses centered along the main drag. There’s always a steady stream of dressed-up bikes to watch out front, but it’s not unheard of to see a cowboy saunter by on horseback or watch some guy cruise his souped-up farm tractor down the boulevard.

Arizona is thick with bike builders, and many of the best in the biz hang out with the Cave Creek crew simply because it’s a load of fun. But there’s also a lot of history here that equates to solid friendships and a familial atmosphere–as long as your family is used to flame-throwing bikes, burnouts and a bit of ribbing, that is.

California twins Gary and Alan Benzler rode out to celebrate their birthday by riding in the Gypsy Tour with Mark Bradshaw and his buddy Jay Allen, just as they had done some 20-odd years ago when the Hideaway was a tiny tavern on the outskirts of town. These days they’re joined by a sizeable pack of appreciative riders who are hosted to lunch and a good time all for the price of a smile. Local Harley-Davidson dealer Buddy Stubbs hosts a H.O.G. ride to raise cash for the Arizona Burn Foundation’s Camp Courage for kids, and the group ride ends at the Road House where swag and cash was doled out as the party raged on.

Builder John Shope hosts a bike show on the last Friday and is notorious for insulting jokes, and his antics keep the crowd well-entertained. Famous East Coast bike builder, painter and Hamster MC member Dave Perewitz, on the other hand, is as serious as they come about his paint show, with beautiful custom-painted awards that are coveted by the recipients. Awarding Dan Thrasher with the Best of Show for his “Cheech and Chong” bagger that was covered with painted pot leaves, exactly 420 of them, showed Perewitz’s sense of humor, however.

On any given afternoon you’re as likely to see a dusty pair of Wranglers gracing a barstool as you are a greasy pair of Levis. And it’s that diversity that makes for a great time during Cave Creek’s celebration of all things motorcycle. There are rodeos held across the street on Wednesdays and Fridays at either the Buffalo Chip or Outlaws, while biker antics rage at the Hideaway or the Road House and everybody welcomes either tribe to venture over to their side. Come Sunday, the cowboys hold a church service while the bikers participate in Sunday Funday with the notorious Builder Games.

For our part, we have to tell ya that there is nothing more fun than watching grown men fight to be first in a hippity-hop relay race. These are some of the most famous builders in the motorcycle world on children’s toys competing against each other for the glory of just saying they won. There is a huge trophy that’s handed down each year from winning builder to the next and all the bragging rights that stem from beating your buddy at a taco sword fight. And what the hell is that, you ask? Just imagine grown men armed with large kitchen spoons in each hand. One has a crisp taco shell over it. The point is to battle each other with one spoon while trying to knock the taco shell off the other. The first guy to break the other man’s taco wins. The whole ordeal was total chaos before Clayton Gandara from Evil Twins Customs won, holding the championship for the second year in a row. Next year’s games will be hosted by Paul Tracy’s Black Label Baggers.

Before the sun set on the 10-day funfest, there was still a custom bike to be given away. Hordes of people swarmed the Hideaway’s stage for a chance to have their ticket drawn to take home a Trask-built, $85,000.00 badass bike. As it turned out, Michelle Hajala from Orlando, Florida, bought a ticket in hopes of winning the bike for her man, Mark Evans. And she did! The spiffy Trask Assault Series, with a turbo-charged 160 hp engine and a custom finish from Liquid Luv Specialty Coating and painted by Eric Carr, will be gliding along the streets of Florida with its proud new owner grinning from ear to ear. Be sure to give him a wave.

Biker-friendly Cave Creek can expect to see its population almost double during this weekend’s Biketoberfest.

This year’s three-day revelry of custom bike vendors, live music and biker-oriented games features a new venue that includes a restaurant; a motorcycle parts, accessories and apparel store; and a biker museum. Among the museum attractions at Hideaway’s Roadhouse are vintage bikes hung from the ceiling.

The grand opening of Hideaway’s  Roadhouse coincides with Biketoberfest, happening from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Hideaway’s Roadhouse, formerly the Cave Creek Tap Haus, will host non-stop events in tandem with the Hideaway Bar and Grill, its neighboring sister bar. Both are owned by Mark Bradshaw, who started  the biker gathering when the Hideaway opened 17 years ago.

It wasn’t called Biketoberfest until recently. It was just called a good time for bikers and motorcycle enthusiasts for the first decade and a half. Over time, the choices about live music, vendors and games have evolved so Bradshaw doesn’t have to exert much effort.

“One thing led to another thing, which led to another thing,” Bradshaw said. “I don’t have to plan anything really. And bikers are such a loyal group. They show up.”

Bradshaw gives priority to Arizona vendors for custom bikes and assures that among the weekend’s festivities the “slow race”  will continue. To win, a biker must ride the slowest while keeping his bike upright.

The scenic, unspoiled desert in Cave Creek has long drawn bikers from around the state, but Bradshaw says he expects bikers from as far as Canada and Germany. About 2,000 bikers journey to the town on a typical weekend. Bike Week in March, which is five days of concentrated celebrations, attracts up to 20,000 motorcycles. This weekend’s Biketoberfest will draw somewhere in between those two numbers, doubling the town’s 5,000 population.

The town tolerates the roar of bikes well, though some residents have complained of traffic delays during Bike Week because of road restrictions.

Cave Creek Councilman Ernie Bunch said the biker events benefit a town that relies on sales tax dollars spent in its bars and restaurants.

“I think we get a bump up when those folks come through. It’s a nice ride to a town with a welcoming atmosphere,” Bunch said. “There’s always going to be some emotions involved when that many bikes show up. But it’s a neat community and 90 percent of the people are in favor of it.”

Owners Mark Bradshaw and Jim O’ Toole are turning off the taps at their beloved Tap Haus in Cave Creek. But fear not, beer and bike lovers.

The bar and eatery is being renovated, expanded and renamed Roadhouse to include not only food and craft beer, but a museum of sorts featuring vintage motorcycles, plus a bike parts and accessories shop.

Roadhouse will debut in October with more than 8,000 square feet of space, including roll-up garage doors opening onto Cave Creek Road.

It’s the natural continuation of tradition, since Bradshaw is best known in the Valley for his Hideaway Grill, also in Cave Creek, which he opened about 16 years ago. That rustic spot is home to leather-clad bikers, hip young adults and family types who appreciate a comfortably rustic bar and cafe that serves juicy half-pound burgers and footlong hot dogs, plus usually has dozens of shiny motorcycles populating its parking lot.

Calling his new venture “the Hideaway on steroids,” Bradshaw also promises a second raised stage for the live music that has been one of Tap Haus’ signature attractions.

In the meantime, construction crews have a strict deadline. Roadhouse must be done in time for Bradshaw’s popular Biketoberfest, slated for Oct. 16-18 with motorcycle displays, live music, food and drink.
